Search Now Checks Its Research Against Every Part of Your Question

Most questions are several questions wearing one sentence. "Is the train or the plane cheaper from Boston to New York in December, and which is faster door to door?" has at least four parts. Search used to run a batch of tools once and write from whatever came back. Now it checks its own work before it writes.

Highlights

  • Search breaks your question into parts that each stand on their own
  • After every round of research, it grades the results against each part
  • It searches again, aiming at the parts that are still open
  • The answer states each claim with the confidence the research reached
  • A tool that fails is handed back to the model as an error, so it can try another way

Research in rounds

Search now researches in rounds. In each one it chooses the tools to call, from web and news to flights, places and academic papers, runs them, and then grades what came back against every part of your question: is this part answered, and did the new results help? Parts that are covered are done. Parts that are not decide what the next round looks for.

Claims at the strength the evidence supports

When Search writes, it knows how far the research got on each part, and it words each claim accordingly. What the sources establish reads as established. What they only partly support is not dressed up as fact. And a part the research could not establish is remembered with the conversation instead of being papered over.

Failures become information

A tool that fails, or a call that is refused, no longer quietly drops out of the round. Its error goes back to the model as that call's result, and the round's other calls still run, so Search can take another route to the same answer.

Why This Matters

An answer that sounds confident about the half it found and silent about the half it did not is worse than no answer. Grading every part, and saying how sure it is, turns "here is some text" into "here is what the evidence shows, and how much."

What this means for you: ask the whole question, all of its parts at once, and get an answer that covers each one or tells you which it could not pin down.
